From local artists, WallaSauce, comes this step by step tutorial on how to hand weave a circular rag rug using upcycled household materials.

By teaching these types of DIY, mending, and sewing skills WallaSauce hopes to show people how to become more self-sufficient and less dependent on large corporations and fast-fashion companies. So grab those rags, make your frame, and get ready to upcycle!

About WallaSauce
WallaSauce is a clothing-based brand from North Adams, Massachusetts, owned and operated by Andrew Casteel and Sarah DeFusco. Their focus is on making handmade, quality products from up-cycled and alternative materials including, but not limited to, clothing, hats, shoes, bags, notebooks, and more. They source their materials mainly from secondhand sellers, giving new life to old things and turning what could be considered trash into fashionable, functional, and unique products. Using processes such as screen-printing, embroidery, cut-and-sew and more, they are able to create one-of-a-kind pieces while trying to produce as little waste as possible.

In 2020, WallaSauce co-founder Sarah DeFusco was part of Artists At Work, hosted by MASS MoCA.

About Artists at Work
Launched in summer 2020 by THE OFFICE performing arts + film and the FreshGrass Foundation — in partnership with cultural hubs like MASS MoCA, Jacob’s Pillow, and Hancock Shaker Village — Artists At Work was inspired by the Works Progress Administration to give artists resources to continue to produce work during COVID-19 while also building community partnerships that will sustain the creative sector as we move together into a reshaped world. During a pilot initiative in Western Massachusetts, participating artists were paid to work for at least six months at partner cultural hubs.
