Grave Matters
Grave Matters consisted of 148 photographs of the grave markers of artists, writers, philosophers, and others who not only have shaped modern Western culture, but have been significant to the work and life of Mark C. Taylor, a philosopher and writer who was the Cluett Professor of Humanities and Religion at Williams College and author of the book Grave Matters. The photographs were taken by Dietrich Christian Lammerts under Taylor’s direction. In the center of the exhibition, Taylor assembled a collection of small soil samples from each grave site. The photographs and mementos were accompanied by rubbings from several of the graves, as well as an interactive video projection combining text and image.
