The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown commissioned Japanese architect Tadao Ando and landscape architects Reed Hilderbrand Associates to develop a campus plan that enhances the Institute’s setting, expanded the facilities for its academic and public programs, and reconfigured its galleries to broaden the ways in which visitors experience works of art. One of the most distinguished architects working today, Ando is well known for creating modernist buildings that complement the natural beauty of their surroundings. Reed Hilderbrand Associates, based in Watertown, Massachusetts, is recognized for an approach to landscape design that derives from a cultivated awareness of each site’s history and special character.
