NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — On the heels of a jam-packed summer of music — including Grizzly Bear (June 16), Ray LaMontagne with special guest Neko Case (June 29), Courtney Barnett (July 12), and Blondie (August 3) — the arresting Angel Olsen rolls into town Saturday, September 29, along with the electronic music artist Julianna Barwick who will open the show. From the low-fi, sparse melancholic folk of her 2010 EP, Strange Cacti, to the electrified, polished rock ‘n’ roll bursting from 2016’s beloved and acclaimed My Woman, Olsen has refused to succumb to a single genre, expectation, or vision. Singing her precise, often revelatory lyrics with a warbling wild voice that blends Dolly Parton and Patti Smith, Olsen swirls sun-kissed dream pop and brooding garage rock into something whole, impressionistic, and new.
“Knockout vocals, driving guitars, and a killer sense of humor that makes no apologies.” — NPR
Olsen first received wide critical praise for her 2014 folk-rock opus Burn Your Fire for No Witness. Her follow-up, My Woman, was one of 2016’s most universally extolled albums and catapulted the already revered songwriter into a larger spotlight. The record made regular appearances on year-end Top 10 lists in Pitchfork, Time, American Songwriter, Esquire, and Newsweek, among others. Olsen’s most recent release, Phases (2017), is a collection of B-sides, demos, and covers, which Pitchfork lauds as “terrific and revelatory in its own right.”
