Art Ninjas Camp
Art Camp for kids ages 5-12, this August
NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — Art Ninjas Camp at MASS MoCA returns for three weeks of stealthy fun in the sun, when kids come together to embark on daily missions filled with art adventure, innovation, and intrigue. During each week-long thematic camp — held weekdays August 10 through August 28, 9am-3pm — young ninjas explore a variety of materials and art-making techniques, including printmaking, batik, sculpture, upcycling, and shrinky-dink mobiles. Campers unlock the secrets of MASS MoCA’s exhibitions and create covert displays in wooded locations, all while embracing their inner creative-mad genius and training their brains with art, yoga, and meditation. Each week includes a trip off-site to hike the Cascades waterfall, and concludes in ninja-style with a closing tea and art ceremony for campers and families.
August 10 – 14: ART-aeologists
Take a trip back in time to explore the world of art and archaeology. Bury and unearth treasures, build a time capsule, decode secret languages, and get positively paleo in this week of dinorific fun.
August 17 – 21: eARTh Seekers
Ninjas find inner peace exploring the outdoors and using a variety of natural materials to create art. Prepare paper and paint from plants, work with clay, build top-secret animal houses, make sun prints, and more.
August 24 – 28: HogwARTs Hackers
A camp for magicians-in-training where ninjas learn how to stun a bogart with a single wave of the wand. Campers create magic potions, swords, and shields; solve mysteries; and master techniques of the great art wizards at this muggle-free camp.
About Art Ninjas Camp
Led by professional educators and intern-counselors, Art Ninjas Camp activities happen across the MASS MoCA campus, from the museum’s art-filled galleries to Kidspace to the museum’s backyard. MASS MoCA exhibiting artists, performers, and local artists often join in the fun, leading campers in special workshops and activities.
Registration for camps opens on January 31. Camps are for children ages 5-12; space is limited, so early booking is recommended. The cost is $175 per child for the week for members, $200 for not-yet members. A healthy mid-morning snack will be provided; campers bring their own lunch. After-care is available from 3pm to 5pm for an additional fee of $15 per child per day. Reservations can be made at massmoca.org or in person at the MASS MoCA box office, located at 87 Marshall Street in North Adams, from 11am to 5pm (open every day except Tuesdays). Reservations can also be charged by calling 413.662.2111 x1 during box office hours. Cancellations require four weeks’ notice before the start of camp to receive a full refund; with three weeks’ notice, a 50% refund. No refunds will be given within two weeks of the start of camp. Find out more online at kidspace.massmoca.org/art-camps/.
Two scholarships per camp are available for students from North Adams Public Schools and the North Berkshire School Union as well as CT Plunkett, Conte, and Capeless Elementary Schools. About MASS MoCA
MASS MoCA is one of the world’s liveliest (and largest) centers for making and enjoying today’s most important art, music, dance, theater, film, and video. Hundreds of works of visual and performing art have been created on its 19th-century factory campus during fabrication and rehearsal residencies, making MASS MoCA among the most productive sites in the country for the creation and presentation of new art. More platform than box, MASS MoCA strives to bring to its audiences art experiences that are fresh, engaging, and transformative.
MASS MoCA’s galleries are open 11am to 5pm every day except Tuesdays. During the summer months, the galleries are open 10am to 6pm every day, Sundays through Wednesdays, with extended evening hours to 7pm on Thursdays through Saturdays, when performing arts events are often featured. The Hall Art Foundation’s Anselm Kiefer exhibition is open seasonally beginning spring 2015. Gallery admission is $18 for adults, $16 for veterans and seniors, $12 for students, $8 for children 6 to 16, and free for children 5 and under. Members are admitted free year-round.
