Step Show: The Musical Co-Presented with Jacob’s Pillow
Saturday, December 9, 8pm Hunter Center
@MASSMoCA
This is the final weekend to visit Anne Samat: Love, on view through December 3. In her solo Kidspace exhibition, Samat, a Malaysian artist from Kuala Lumpur, adorns traditional Southeast Asian Pua Kumbu weavings with humble household goods from 99 cent stores and thrift shops to construct totemic figurative sculptures. Brightly colored and heavily detailed, each one resonates as an avatar of a family member or friend. Samat’s work is dedicated to the feeling of love — found in personal relationships, in past generations that paved the way for her, and in potential feelings that could exist among strangers. The centerpiece of the installation — a larger-than-life size figure with outstretched arms made to feel like one is entering a hug — was created specifically for MASS MoCA. Plan your visit at the link in bio.

Tickets ($15, $10 for students) are available at the link in our bio, along with video in the artist`s own words from early in the piece`s development. We look forward to concluding our fall season with this captivating production next weekend.

In Jarvis Rockwell: Us, figures from the artist’s massive collection of toys and figurines interact and organize themselves on glass panels, soaring over visitors’ heads in the building`s historic light well. Learn more about the installation, and Rockwell`s history of work at MASS MoCA, at the link in our bio.
November 27 may be the last chance to experience Us here in the B6: Robert W. Wilson Building, but we look forward to visiting the collection again once it "walks" to nearby @hoteldownstreet soon.

"Helen Molesworth is not afraid to say what’s on her mind." – @voguemagazine
On Wednesday, November 29, join MASS MoCA Chief Curator Denise Markonish for a book talk & signing with Helen Molesworth as we celebrate the release of Open Questions: Thirty Years of Writing about Art (Phaidon, 2023), now available in the MASS MoCA Research & Development Store.
Over the past three decades, the singular vision of this "beloved provocateur" (Vogue) has established her as a dynamic and influential voice in the art world. This generously illustrated reader — the first ever collection of her writings — presents 24 essays from the past 30 years, gathered from exhibition catalogues and art publications such as @Artforum, @documentjournal, @friezeofficial, and October (@mitpress).
The volume opens with a new essay that lays out Molesworth’s belief in art’s unique capacity for merging knowledge and feeling. It also includes new critical and reflective commentary on her past writing. Don`t miss this free conversation in Club B10 Wednesday — RSVP recommended.

On view now, the exhibition Like Magic brings together artists who employ technologies of magic to resist systems that attempt to surveil and control people’s lives and stories, often because of their race, ability, sexuality, gender identity, indigeneity, or immigration status. Simone Bailey, Raven Chacon, Grace Clark, Johanna Hedva, Gelare Khoshgozaran, Cate O’Connell-Richards, Rose Salane, Petra Szilagyi, Tourmaline, and Nate Young use healing earth, witches’ brooms, AI, divination, and more to imagine care-full and joy-full futures into being despite the peril promised by the past and present.

Experience the work of artist, composer, and musician Jason Moran in multiple ways this weekend — in the galleries and on stage in concert with his trio The Bandwagon.
On stage in the Hunter Center Friday, November 17, Jason Moran and his trailblazing trio The Bandwagon perform live in concert. Before the show, experience Jason Moran Black Stars: Writing in the Dark, which brings together his works on paper and two sculptures from his STAGED series. Drawing on the photographs and documentation preserved through Black jazz musicians’ archives, as well as oral history interviews, Moran creates installations modeled on spaces that shaped jazz in the 20th century. Then join us Saturday, November 18 for short pop-ups in the gallery with The Bandwagon, featuring conversation with the artist and curator, at 1 & 3pm.
Head to the link in our bio to learn more, and we will see you in the galleries soon! 🎶
