A Goddessey

NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — LAVA’s language of feminist dance includes towering human pyramids, acrobatic wrestling, and subtle physicality. The company’s new piece, developed in part at MASS MoCA, is a survival story that vaults the audience from a patriarchal present into a rainbow-colored feminist future. LAVA performs A Goddessey for kids and their grown-ups in MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center on Saturday, April 15, at 3pm.

Founded in 2000 by Sarah East Johnson, LAVA is an ensemble of diverse artists combining dance, theater, and acrobatics into captivating presentations packed with social commentary. It is known for performances that mix dance and acrobatics in what the Brooklyn Daily Eagle has deemed “satisfying, magical, human.” The group develops and performs original works that utilize their athleticism and intellect, often weaving in scientific elements — such as how the human body relates to geological forms — through movement and emotion. The award-winning troupe received a Bessie Award and an OBIE Award for Lava Love, a production that highlights the relationships between young women.

Their newest work, A Goddessey, is the amalgamation of 15 years of empowering performances exploring the human body as a social landscape. Featuring ropes, nets, hoops, mats, and trapeze, the emotionally driven performance delivers entertainment and sustenance, empowering and exciting people of all ages to find their own strength.

LAVA performs A Goddessey on Saturday, April 15, at 3pm, in MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center. Lickety Split, MASS MoCA’s café, serves up crisp salads, hearty soups, and lip-smacking pub fare for lunch before the show. Tickets are $5 for members, $5 kids 6-16, $10 advanced, $12 day of, and free for kids 5 and under. Tickets for all events are available through the MASS MoCA box office located on Marshall Street in North Adams, open 11am to 5pm every day except Tuesdays.
