NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — With their dazzling 2018 Nonesuch Records release All Ashore, Punch Brothers firmly re-established themselves as the world’s most exciting progressive bluegrass band. Each member’s various other projects (including the inimitable Chris Thile’s Live From Here hosting duties) keep them busy enough that a chance to see them together, on Saturday, March 16, at 8pm at MASS MoCA, is not to be missed. This is the Punch Brothers’ first return visit to MASS MoCA since headlining the 2015 FreshGrass Festival for thousands of visitors. Singer-songwriter and MASS MoCA favorite, Gabriel Kahane, opens the night for this intimate featured performance in the monumental Hunter Center for the Performing Arts.
Punch Brothers are the quintet of mandolinist Chris Thile, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny and violinist Gabe Witcher. Says The Washington Post, “With enthusiasm and experimentation, Punch Brothers take bluegrass to its next evolutionary stage, drawing equal inspiration from the brain and the heart.” Their latest release, All Ashore, was praised by The Independent as “…an album of rich instrumentation and understated beauty that reveals deeper nuances on each and every listen.”
Brooklyn composer Gabriel Kahane returns to MASS MoCA with his 2018 release Book of Travelers, first workshopped at the museum last fall and inspired by his two-week train journey across the country.
