Inspired by Aristophanes’ theory that humans are double-sided creatures forever struggling to be whole, Leonard Nimoy’s photographs in Secret Selves (on view through January 2, 2011) reveal his subjects’ other half. Nimoy’s process involves not just photography but also coaxing off-line avatars out of his subjects. The exhibition presents a compelling perspective on the structure of identity as well as an intimate look at the relationship between portrait subject and photographer. In this special conversation, Nimoy talks about the making of Secret Selves.
