MASS MoCA announces an exciting opportunity for a visual artist to serve in residence with teen participants. MASS MoCA Teen Programs aim to expose area youth to contemporary art-making practices, build confidence and leadership abilities, provide creative avenues for self-expression, and deepen teens’ connections to the museum and greater North Adams communities.
The artist will collaborate with the teens (area youth ages 13-19) to conceptualize, design, and install a month-long public art exhibition. The teaching artist should address socially conscious themes in his/her work. The artist must also have a strong interest in working with high school aged students. Throughout the duration of the month-long residency, the artist will work with teen participants to create artwork that is reflective of his/her aesthetic methods and conceptual themes. Local artists and/or those working with digital media are strongly encouraged to apply.
The teaching artist will work with MASS MoCA staff to arrange a precise schedule based on the project needs, but he/she should anticipate starting the week of July 6th and spending roughly 15 hours/week for four weeks on the project, for a total of 60 teaching hours with additional installation and planning time. The project should include a culminating event for the public. The teaching artist will work in collaboration with the teens and MASS MoCA staff throughout the duration of the project.
The artist will be provided with a stipend. Materials and other project costs will be covered. Housing is not provided.
To apply, please send a resume, 5 work samples or link to website, and project proposal to Amanda Tobin, Senior Museum Educator, at atobin@massmoca.org. Proposals are due March 15, 2015. Project proposals should provide: socially conscious theme to be addressed; materials; suggested art activities; a statement on how you anticipate combining your own artistic practice with the teens’ skills and interests; and a description of any relevant experience as a teaching artist. Members of the Teen Task Force will review applications.
