Since the beginning of the school-year, we’ve had the pleasure of weekly sessions with three different awesome groups of kids. Two groups of 1st-3rd-graders comprised our LEGO club program, and a group of 5th- and 6th-graders made up our program focusing on a theme of Curiosity. On the last day of the program, we asked each group to vote on how they wanted to spend their final session with us. Unsurprisingly, nearly every kid asked for treats of some kind (and we were happy to oblige — Shannon makes super-yummy cupcakes), and both the younger groups asked for a dance party and time to play games. There were some pretty sweet dance moves (what 8-year-old doesn’t rock out when a Justin Beiber tune comes on?), ice cream and colorful balloons.
But something that we didn’t see coming was the request from our hilarious older group. For their last session, they wanted a spa day. That’s right, the guys as well as the girls — everyone was in favor of chilling out on some yoga mats, painting nails, making homemade moisturizing masks from avocado and lemon juice, and taking it easy. We pulled out all the stops — we even had slices of cucumber to cover their eyes. It was a surprise to us, but a great one. In this overstressed world, we hope these kids will always remember what’s important and occasionally just take time to relax.
