SUMMARY:School Break Kidspace Workshops: February 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join MASS MoCA Museum Educators for a series of free workshops for all ages during school break\, February 16-20. Workshops will take place in Kidspace at 11am and 1pm every day\, and each will focus on a different art medium and process. Come be inspired\, learn something new\, and make a project to take home! The ArtBar will also be open for drop-in art-making throughout the day. \nRSVP encouraged but not required. (Note: Some workshops may be capped based on attendance\, RSVPs will be honored before walk-ups.) Workshops are open to all ages\, however younger children may need support from guardians. All children must be accompanied by an adult in Kidspace. \nMonday\, February 16: The Declaration Project with Lara Downes \nJoin renowned pianist and NPR host Lara Downes for a workshop exploring intergenerational perspectives\, hopes\, and wishes for our country’s future\, in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Following a brief piano performance in Kidspace by Lara\, focusing on American music as an expression of our shared journeys and stories\, attendees will have the opportunity to imagine the next chapter of our national story and contribute their ideas through writing and/or drawing. Contributions will be included as part of Lara’s national The Declaration Project\, which will culminate in a performance at MASS MoCA this summer. \n  \nTuesday\, February 17: Storybook Puppets with Beth Davis \nRooted in MASS MoCA’s commitment to the performing arts\, this workshop will explore puppetry as a narrative art form. Focused on the children’s book The Cow Buzzed\, attendees will learn how to tell a story through puppetry\, design their own barnyard animal puppet\, and help bring the story to life through a brief performance as a narrator reads the book.  \n  \nWednesday\, February 18: Developing a Cartoon Character with Heidi Whitus  \nSparked by the influence of cartoon characters in Vincent Valdez’s works\, this workshop introduces the fundamentals of character design and concept development. Participants will explore how artists use visual storytelling to create expressive characters\, while reflecting on what makes their favorite characters unique as they design their own original cartoons.  \n  \nThursday\, February 19: Reductive Sculpture with Rebecca Cuscaden Marvin \nDrawing inspiration from the marble works of Louise Bourgeois\, this workshop will teach participants the technique of reductive sculpting\, in which the artist removes material from a larger block to reveal the final form. Attendees will learn more about this approach to sculpting\, its history and use in contemporary art\, and will have the opportunity to create a sculpture of their own to take home. \n  \nFriday\, February 20: Pointillism Drawing with Donald Jackson \nInspired by Sol LeWitt’s process of layering color and impact of historical painting techniques on contemporary artists\, this workshop will explore the basics of color theory and the history of pointillism through drawing. Attendees will create a drawing that features all of the colors of the rainbow and a simple design using only tiny dots of primary colors to compose it. \n

SUMMARY:Robin Frohardt Shopping Center of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Herb Alpert Award-winner Robin Frohardt — whose immersive\, multimedia experience The Plastic Bag Store captivated audiences at MASS MoCA in 2024 — returns to the museum for a preview of Shopping Center of the Universe\, a theatrical work of speculative nonfiction.\nThis new work in development\, grounded in reality yet deeply reflective\, offers a poetic meditation on our relationship with the natural world. Blending puppetry\, prose\, original music\, and intricate handmade sets\, Frohardt gives shape to the cultural and personal curiosity she experienced growing up surrounded by big-box stores. Frohardt reframes the parking lot as part of the ecosystem rather than separate from it: tree roots break through asphalt\, condensation from an air conditioner wears a hole in a sidewalk\, and a flock of birds crash-lands\, mistaking the lights on the pavement for the surface of water. This genre-defying\, live-cinema project is her innovative attempt to reconcile the predicament of being born a soul in a body raised in Walmart. \nAbout the Artist:\nKnown for her rich aesthetic and highly detailed constructions\, Robin Frohardt is an award-winning theater and film director. Her narrative-based film\, puppetry\, and sculpture use recognizable materials\, often trash\, to create richly detailed worlds that make magic of the mundane and highlight the trivialities of daily life. Her theatrical work has earned her a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Creative Capital Award\, multiple Jim Henson Foundation Grants\, and the Herb Alpert Prize. Her play The Pigeoning\, hailed by The New York Times as “a tender\, fantastical symphony of the imagination\,” debuted in 2013 and continues to tour at home and abroad. Her follow-up project The Plastic Bag Store premiered in Times Square in 2020 and has since toured to Los Angeles\, Chicago\, Adelaide\, Austin\, and North Adams. Following The Plastic Bag Store’s six-month run at MASS MoCA\, it was recognized by Hyperallergic as one of “the Top 50 Exhibitions Around the World in 2024.” Frohardt’s films have been the official selections at the Telluride Film Festival\, Aspen Shortsfest\, the One Earth Film Festival\, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). \nPrices include all fees\, which are waived for MASS MoCA members. \nProduced by Pomegranate Arts \n
