In the twenty years since “Loser” hit the charts and introduced the world to an ironic poet of breathtaking musical range, Beck has become one of the most creative and idiosyncratic voices in 21st-century music of any genre, mixing influences as disparate as hip-hop, anti-folk, and hi-fi funk into a sound completely his own. Two of his albums appear in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, four have hit platinum, and his just-released Morning Phase, is among his best.
The GOASTT (The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger) is a five-piece, psych-rock band fronted by Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl touring with Beck to support its recent release, Midnight Sun. The only son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon is accustomed to comparisons with his father, the infamous Beatle. The parallels are evident in The GOASTT’s innovative sound — compelling, visceral, and vital.
