Iconic documentary filmmakers Pennebaker and Hegedus (The War Room and Don't Look Back) secured exclusive access to shoot an epic, never-before-filmed test of France's finest artisans. The resulting film is a mind-boggling plunge into one of the greatest competitions in cooking: the prestigious Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (Best Craftsmen in France). Sixteen French pastry chefs gathered in Lyon for three intense days of mixing, piping, and carving everything from delicate chocolates to six-foot sugar sculptures in hopes of being declared one of the best by President Nicolas Sarkozy. Kings of Pastry (by Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker, 2009) follows the chefs' quest for the blue, white, and red striped collar worn on the jackets of the competition winners - an honor of ultimate recognition that is as much a dream as it is an obsession.
Our Winter/Spring 2013 documentary film series, Compete!, celebrates films about winning, losing, and how you play the game. Films are shown on Thursday nights at 7:30 PM up in the club (Club B-10). Snacks and drinks are available before and during the screening. Screenings are often followed by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. Click here to see entire film documentary series schedule.
