The Vanquished Series: Therianthropic Space Trickster
(The Emergence of the Spotted Cosmic Panther), 2016-17
Digital drawings on archival paper mounted to metal, 85 × 38.5”

In 2013, New Orleans artist Dawn DeDeaux started her MotherShip series, postulating on the future of our planet and merging mythology with scientific data. The Vanquished Series is part of this series of work and seeks to characterize mankind in a post-Earth world. Inspired by images of explorers, astronauts, and first responders, DeDeaux begins with source imagery — her own or images found online — and digitally manipulates the figures as if they are undergoing the effects of warp speed. This lot is one of six Vanquished images in her series, four of which are now on view at MASS MoCA in Thumbs Up For the Mothership.

DeDeaux has been merging art with new technologies since the 1970s. Early works include CB Radio Booths, which traveled communication systems to the streets of underserved communities. Mid-career works focused on large-scale installations and immersive, media environments including The Face of God, at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Recent works, including The MotherShip Series, are inspired by environmental change. Recent solo exhibitions include Tulane University Center for Bioenvironmental Research, New Orleans, LA (2014); Acadiana Center for the Arts, Lafayette, LA (2014); and Marfa Ballroom, Marfa, TX (2010).
